New Zealand's Little Blue Penguin / Kororā

Discover more about the Little Blue Penguins / Kororā that call Caroline Bay home.

The Little Blue Penguin / Kororā is the world's smallest penguins standing at only

30-40cm (approx. 1 foot tall) and weighing around 1kg (2.5 pounds).  The Little Blue Penguin / Kororā unlike the black and white plumage of most penguins, kororā have a slate-blue back and head which helps camouflage them in the ocean.

Little Blue Penguins spend their days at sea feeding and return to shore after dusk, often calling their mates or chicks in burrows under rocks, dunes and even wharves.

Kororā are expert divers reaching depths up to 35 metres (approx. 115 feet) hunting small fish like anchovies, sprats and squid close to shore.

Many colonies in New Zealand live near human settlements - including popular spots like right here at Caroline Bay in Timaru
